There’s a misconception about bisexuality.

theillustratednerdgirl:

Actually, there are lots of them. But the one I’m going to address right now is the idea that in order to qualify as bisexual one must be equally attracted to both men and women, as if you can’t have a preference one way or the other.

And that’s just not true. Think of the Kinsey Scale. Just as people rarely fall completely on one side or the other, there are also lots of us who don’t fall squarely in the middle. And that’s okay.

Some people may have some homosexual attraction/experience and still not consider themselves bisexual because the majority of their attraction/experience is hetero. And that’s okay too. Your identity is yours and you can frame it however you want to. But this idea that you have to be “bisexual enough” in order to qualify is pure myth.

Word.

This is the main reason that I was so ambiguous and conflicted about my identity all through high school and most of college.  Part of me felt like even though I was attracted to both women and men, since I hadn’t actually dated any women I couldn’t really be sure, or it didn’t count.  Sometimes I said I was bi; sometimes I said I was straight.  I started using the term “heteroflexible”.  It wasn’t until my last year or so of college that I started realizing what theillustratednerdgirl is saying.

And around that point, of course, I started learning things about nonbinary genders and pansexuality, and decided that was a better term for what I really am; I’m open to loving anyone of any gender.  Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t.

(Food for thought…what would the nonbinary equivalent of the Kinsey Scale look like?  A web?  A scatter plot?  A Venn diagram?)

So many costumes, so few Halloweens. Carly. Pansexual, coffee enthusiast, self-proclaimed Rocky Whore. On this page, you'll see a lot of pictures of cats, feminist rants and celebrations, food, pretty things, fandom junk, and lots and lots of miscellanea. I'm a political loudmouth but I can always learn.
